Thousands of spectators file into seats around you while positive yet somber music plays in the background. You look to your left, and then to your right and see rows upon rows of people who look just like you; you look down at your hands and the most powerful piece of paper is in your hand. Congratulations, you are now a college graduate. What's next though? With bills and student debt to pay off, the immediate reaction is to find a job. Unfortunately for the majority of us recent graduates peaking our heads into the "real workplace," we already have a target on our backs. A stigma surrounds our work ethic, because we are millennials.
According to a study published in Forbes, 59% of business decision makers and 62% of higher education influentials give recent college graduates a C grade or lower for preparedness in their first jobs. The problem with this statistic however, is that the definition of 'preparedness' is completely one sided. As millennials (and though it's impossible to generalize everyone), we like jobs where we can have an impact on something, we will get the task done and do what it takes to succeed; but not necessarily in the same manner or mindset of our predecessors.
Greg Steiner, a student at St. Norbert College and member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity has said he as endured some trouble in his extra curricular activities because of the stigma that surrounds his generation. " There have been instances where I've been passed up for a role or a more important job/task because my boss or superior assumes that I'm lazy and will cut corners to get the job done just because of my age." Greg has expressed anxiety for his graduation because he fears he will not be given opportunities because of his age.
According to the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the millennial generation is the largest cohort size in history, and the most diverse. This generation has the potential to create change, a fact that Zizzo Group President and CEO, Anne Zizzo sees as huge potential. Anne says "Millennials are known for being creative problem solvers and that is something I love to see in my business. They are generally more tech savvy and open to constructive criticism which is something I always look for during the hiring process."
Kristy Mushall, a student at UW- Milwaukee can attest to the statement made by Anne above. Through attending Wisconsin's most diverse institute of higher education, Kristy has experienced first hand how well different cultures and social groups have worked together to complete the same goal oriented task. She said "We (millennials) don't get enough credit. We've grown up in a completely different world than Gen X'ers or Baby Boomers, and our mindset is completely different; but that doesn't mean we're any less hard working or motivated."
According to Forbes, the majority of the workplace will be made up of Millennials by 2025; but are we ready? Is the workforce ready for us?

Teens, Sexting and the Powerful Influence of the Media (Hard News Story)
By
definition from the ASCD, sexting is considered to be the ‘exchange of sexual messages or
images’ and ‘the creating, sharing and forwarding of
sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images’ through mobile
phones and/or the internet. In
a society driven by the convenience of technology, the act of sexting itself is
not necessarily the shock factor; but rather the ages of the "sexters" that is shocking.
In a compilation of statistics conducted by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, The Pew Internet & American Life Project and the Cox Communications Teen Online & Wireless Safety Survey on GuardChild; 11% of young teen girls ages 13-16 have admitted to sending or posting nude or semi-nude photos/ videos of themselves. Though there are many theories surrounding the cause of this rapid age decline, the most popular theory is the influence of the media.
Melissa Emmons, a 36 year old mother from West Allis, WI shared her thoughts on the matter. "I have a 14 year old daughter who has grown up with technology her entire life, she is very concerned with fitting in and I'm worried that will lead her down the wrong path."
As technology advances, the ability for these teens to engage in sexting has increased dramatically. There are now apps designed to hide the content on an individual's mobile device. These apps can make it appear as though all hope is lost for parents like Melissa who attempt to monitor their children's phone use.
Two students at UW- Green Bay, Aaron Hepp and Emily Seideman both acknowledge that sexting has become a problem among younger generations, however have differing opinions on the severity of the problem. Aaron says "I just don't think it's right... Kids that age should be enjoying their childhood, not acting like grown adults." Aaron also says that he believes technology and the media are enabling kids to act this way. Emily had a different take on the situation however, she said "Kids are growing up faster than we did because they are growing up in a totally different world. I think they are going to do what they want, and we should be educating these kids instead of just telling them its wrong."
Sexting is not a new concept, in a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association in 2015, over 80% of respondents reported sexting in the past year. With mainstream media promoting sex, sexuality and sexting for marketing revenue purposes, the main component in combating this act is open communication and education.

Interview with Chelsey Lewis of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
I interviewed Multimedia Journalist, Chelsey Lewis of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for the Professional Journalist Interview and Paper. I was particularly impressed and intrigued by her profile and felt that it provided an extra layer to the interview. For that reason, I chose to include both our Q&A section, as well as information from her profile. Her story is inspirational not only to aspiring Journalists but all graduating college students as she was able to find a job in her field right out of college.
PROFILE
Chelsey Lewis discovered her passion for Journalism while attending UW-Madison, the university from which she graduated in 2009. During her time here she obtained a degree in both Journalism and Mass Communication as well as Spanish, and got her start as a Journalist by working for the university's Student Newspaper. Lewis gained experience through a flurry of internships including time with the Big Ten Network and Radio Disney. Upon graduation, Lewis accepted a position with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's magazine, 'Wisconsin Trails' as their Assistant Editor. She advanced her skills here for just over three years before joining the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's newsroom, where she currently works. She has gained an unmeasurable amount of knowledge and experience and was happy to share a few words of wisdom during our Q&A session.
INTERVIEW
Q: How did you get started with your career in Journalism?
A: I took a really cool magazine class in college where we got to put an entire magazine together, and that was when I realized I found my niche. From there I went on to work for my school's newspaper and did a few internships before I was hired by the Milwaukee Journal sentinel as an Assistant Editor to their outdoor magazine, 'Wisconsin Trails.'
Q: How did you advance to the job you have now?
A: Unfortunately, as technology progressed the Journal Sentinel decided to shut down the Wisconsin Trails magazine. They liked the content though so they kept the website going and I was able to head that. My official title was an Editor, but I also managed the website and our social media; it was kind of overwhelming at first because at that time social media platforms were still pretty new. After I sort of, "proved myself" so to speak, I joined the newsroom and now I'm the Multimedia Journalist.
Q: What does being a Multimedia Journalist all entail?
A: I do a lot of work for the Travel, and Entertainment sections. One section I'm particularly responsible for is "Fresh Milwaukee or Tap Milwaukee," where we find the hottest or trendiest things going on in the community and report on it.
Q: What is a typical work day like for you?
A: I guess that depends: when I'm in the office I will typically check my email, look over any PR pitches, edit some of my current stories, work on some upcoming writing assignments, research story planning for future stories, and then check/ update our social media throughout the day. When I'm doing field work however, I could be running around for an interview, filling a radio spot, self- promoting etc. Nothing is ever the same which is fun for me.
Q: How has the rise in social media changed the Journalism Industry?
A: Journalists aren't just Journalists anymore, we're really "jack of all trades" now. We have to self-promote, and have excellent digital skills. Basically, we have to get our face and names on every platform. Aside from that, we have to be able to shoot and edit our own footage because that is becoming the norm.
Q: Do you think this advance in social media and technology have created opportunities or challenges for Journalists?
A: Absolutely. I think in this case, a lot of the opportunities and challenges are synonymous though. For example, social media has provided us more platforms which means we have the potential for global reach now. With that being said, getting one story out on all of those platforms and tailoring the same story to fit each platform can be very tedious. One major opportunity we have now is the ability to gain more insight via analytics. We can see exactly which stories are getting the most views/engagement etc., who is looking at them, on which platforms and for how long. This allows us to adapt our writing and stories to better the needs and wants of the community.
Q: Going off of that, do you feel there are any pros or cons of working in this field?
A: Of course. I love my job, I wake up every day excited to go to work and I think that alone is a pro this field offers. Something that may be both a pro and a con could be that there is always something new. Whether it is something new going on, like a story or something new to learn; every day is unpredictable which is just something you have to get acclimated to. We (the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) have partnered with Gannett now which has made our stories etc. more efficient, but it also means we have less Journalists working on stories; and to me, more heads are better than one. I think it's easier to come up with more creative content and strategize better with more people on board. My favorite pro, is when we get feedback on our stories. Positive feedback always makes us feel good and negative feedback helps us better our work for the good of the community.
Q: What do you predict for the future of Journalism?
A: Wow, that's a really broad question! I suppose as far as the industry goes, we can expect consolidation. We have already begun to see that here with our partnership with Gannett, and I would predict that will continue to happen throughout other agencies etc. as well. I think there is a possibility that we could move into more of a non-profit type of role. As Journalists, our goal is to serve the community and sometimes we don't get the best rep by doing that with a for profit business. Journalism is essential to democracy, so I would like to stay that this career isn't going anywhere but it would be ignorant to think changes will not occur. Eventually, and this is already beginning to happen, but eventually Journalists will become one man bands; finding, covering, editing and getting footage for the story all on their own. In order for Journalism to survive, I think future Journalists need to remember how important credibility is.
Q: What advice do you have for aspiring Journalists?
A: In this day and age having multimedia skills are pretty much expected, I would say the biggest piece of advice I can offer for aspiring Journalists is to perfect their writing skills. Being a good writer is HUGE. To be a good writer though, you have to read good writing. I would suggest reading articles from the New York Times or other reputable sources. Having great writing skills in addition to being knowledgeable in digital and multimedia, will be huge advantages for aspiring Journalists. One final thing I think is important is that aspiring Journalists need to be very well adapted in many areas of expertise, but as this field advances that will become natural.

News Analysis: week 3
Local
Madison, WI- A local police officer has been placed on administrative leave for protective services, after an inmate plotted the officer's death. According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Alijouwon Watkins (20), a current inmate at Dane County jail has been accused of constructing a plot to kill the female officer following his arrest by her, in June, 2015.
According to Police Chief Mike Koval, Watkins sought the help of another inmate to carry out the plans. Although the plans went as far as Watkins transferring money into an account to fund the plans, the aiding inmate contacted authorities instead. WRN stated that Watkins was able to obtain personal information about the officer; including her name, date of birth, personal cell phone number, work hours as well as the district in which she was assigned.
No charges have yet been made, however Watkins does face tentative charges of conspiracy to commit homicide as well as conspiracy to commit perjury. WKOW stated Watkins is already facing five felony and three misdemeanor charges for the June, 2015 arrest which was classified as a domestic battery case.
Watkins' trial was set to begin on Monday for the June, 2015 arrest, however may be delayed as a result of the most recent plot.
Reasoning
I chose to brief this news story because although it was covered across multiple, local news outlets; this story was not widely known. Additionally, I think it is important to raise awareness of the dangers our law enforcement, be it police officers, judges etc. face every day. This story demonstrates the dangers a job can possess even after that job is done. I also chose to cover this story because of the inmate who chose to contact authorities rather than carry out the plans for money. Too often, those who are incarcerated are only seen as such however this story provided evidence that it is possible to do good despite having that classification.

Orlando, FL- Mayor Buddy Dyer has declared a state of emergency for the city of Orlando after a gunman opened fire in a nightclub early Sunday morning, killing 50 and injuring at least 53 others.
According to CNN, Omar Mateen (29) entered 'Pulse' nightclub around 2:00am Sunday morning, armed with a legally obtained assault rifle and handgun as well as a "suspicious device" strapped to his body, Police arrived on the scene within minutes, however Mateen held hostages within the nightclub until around 5:00am. Nine police officers were engaged in gunfire with Mateen, and were forced to detonate a controlled explosion in order to distract the gunman and break into the club. The gunman was killed during the gunfire exchange.
The Washington Post stated that this is the nations deadliest mass shooting in the country's history. While authorities have not stated a possible motive at this point, after further investigation; homophobia is a possibility as 'Pulse' was widely known as "the hottest gay bar in the heart of Florida."
In a news briefing, Police Chief John Mina said "It's absolutely terrible, fifty victims in one location, one shooting, is absolutely one of the worst tragedies we've seen." WESH urged witnesses to talk with Orlando police headquarters, and for anyone who is able; to donate blood.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Reasoning
I chose to brief this news story for many reasons. From a journalistic standpoint this story is extremely timely and newsworthy. However, this is also an incredibly tragic event. As a nation, this is the worst mass shooting in our nations history, following the Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook shootings. For the LGBTQ community, this event is a detrimental loss not only in all of the progress they have made in terms of tolerance and equality of treatment.

Petra, Jordan- A massive fourth century BC monument has been discovered in Petra according to National Geographic.
The study was published by archaeologist, Sarah Parcak a National Geographic fellow and Christopher Tuttle, the Executive Director of Council of American Overseas Research Centers; in "American Schools of Oriental Research." In the study, the structure is described as being the length of an Olympic swimming pool and twice the width. BBC states that the surface pottery suggests the monument was built in the mid- second century BC when Petra was at its peak. Its structure consists of a 184x161ft platform with a slightly smaller platform enclosed within. The smaller platform was paved with flagstones, with the east side of the interior platform being lined with a row of columns once crowning a grand staircase.
Tuttle credited the use of satellite images, drone photography and ground surveys for the discovery. In a statement made to CNN, Tuttle explained "I've worked in Petra for 20 years, and I knew something was there, but it's certainly legitimate to call this a discovery."
The monument is speculated to be a possible ceremonial spot, located just half a mile south of the center of the ancient city. Currently, there are no other structures similar to the one discovered in Petra.
Reasoning
I chose to brief this news story because of the timeliness and the content. History and archaeology has always fascinated me, so for a new monument of this caliber to have been discovered is very exciting. This ancient city has been a well known tourist cite for many years, bringing in hundreds of thousands of tourists each year and this new discovery may help bring those numbers back after a recent decline.

News Analysis: week 2
Local
Madison, WI- The legislative Audit Bureau report found that the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has not been abiding by its own policies. In regards to monitoring and policing pollution of large livestock farms and wastewater treatment plants, the DNR has failed to distribute violation notices in 94% of the 558 instances according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
There is heavy enforcement for polluters to file annual compliance reports according to the DNR, however auditors found that only 36 of 1,900 reports were officially documented as having been received by the DNR. In addition, the report found that the DNR has been extending permits without review, a strict violation of their own policies,
A spokesman for the DNR, James Dick, defended the DNR in a statement claiming the agency often uses other means and tactics instead of distributing violation notices in order to obtain compliance from violators. One example Dick provided was discussing the violation directly with the violator, however according to the DNR policy; violation notices were called in all 558 cases disclosed in the audit.
According to the Journal Sentinel, Dick stated in an email that "because DNR uses other means to obtain compliance, the number of (notices of violation) is not an indicator of whether an environmental issue was addressed."
The problem lies within the lack of staff to be able to thoroughly investigate all violations. In an effort to rectify this situation, Senator Robert Cowles (co-chairman of the Legislators Audit Committee) is inquiring a funding amount needed by the DNR in order to "set things right,"WPR stated.
Reasoning
I chose to brief this story because it hits many components of a newsworthy story. Not only is this a relevant and timely story, but its effects impact the entire state. The DNR is supposed to be a credible and reputable source, so to find out that they have been "cutting corners" so to speak is frightening in a sense.

Calabasas, CA- A wildfire broke out on Saturday afternoon forcing 5,000 people (3,700 homes) from their homes. According to Los Angeles County Deputy Fire Chief John Tripp, the fire is on the slope of a canyon and has already consumed 516 acres of land.
According to CNN, an evacuation was ordered for the residents of Calabasas and Topanga when the fire originally broke out, however the residents of Calabasas were given the all clear to return to their homes as of Sunday morning. In a statement made in USA Today, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector, Joey Marron said 30% of the fire was contained as of Sunday morning as well.
The fire was caused by a pickup truck that crashed into a powerpole on the Mulholland highway in Calabasas. As a result, the pole fell causing the transformer to explode and thus ignite the fire.
Currently there are 400 firefighters, as well as water dropping helicopters working to combat the fire, Fox News said. Because of the location however, Tripp explained "...Its very dangerous for us to do a direct attack." Additionally, Battalion Chief Dennis Cross told KNBC-TV "We're dealing with a fire that's moving in every direction simultaneously... we can't get to everybody."
Authorities are advising residents that have not been ordered to evacuate, to take precautions and remain inside as much as possible as the whereabouts of ash of the fire are completely unknown and uncontrollable.
Reasoning
I chose to brief this story because although wildfires are common to California, the nature of this fire is not. I found it extremely interesting that the high temperatures, and dry weather were such strong influences on the severity of the fire. As calabasas is known to be a wealthier city, home to many celebrities such as Jessica Simpson; it will be interesting to see what kind of attention this fire gets compared to a forest fire for example.

Thailand- Buddhist monastery, Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno; otherwise known as the 'Tiger Temple' has lost all 137 of its tigers as of Saturday. According to CNN, the tigers will be moved to a governmental sanctuary in Ratchaburi province.
Despite being a popular tourist attraction, as well as financial goldmine to the monastery (bringing in an estimated $3 million annually), the Tiger Temple has received a great deal of scrutiny over the years. Though the temple has been accused of keeping the tigers in "jail like enclosures, feeding them poorly, and physically abusing them" by both conservation organizations as well as former temple workers; according to the National Geographic, the Temple has denied everything.
The removal of the tigers occurred after federal officials filed charges upon finding 40 dead tiger cubs in a freezer at the Buddhist temple. Five men, including three monks have been charged with possession of endangered animal parts without permission. Though the individuals have since been released, an ongoing investigation is still being pursued, and if sentenced could result in a maximum of four years in prison and/or a $1,100 fine.
Department of National Parks spokesman, Adisorn Nuchdamrong stated "we've confiscated all the hard disks of closed circuit cameras in this temple for police to find evidence of wrongdoing," according to the BBC
Reasoning
I chose to brief this story, partially because of the shock factor. The Buddhist religion, and monks in specific are known for being peaceful and preserving all life forms; so for a story of this nature to break is very uncommon. I also chose this story because it is not a "case closed" situation. There are still many unanswered questions as the investigation continues, and I felt this story allowed for multiple interpretations and viewpoints as well as the potential for an open discussion.

Anonymous sources have confirmed the plans for Maine native store, L.L. Bean to open their first Wisconsin store in Spring 2017. The company, known for their "quality outdoor gear and apparel," plans to open their store at The Corners; a mixed-use project under construction in Brookfield, WI. As a family owned business, founded in 1912; the company has been slow to expand outside of Maine having only recently ventured to 13 other U.S states since 2000. Through the implementation of their Wisconsin store, L.L. Bean will further their continuous growth and expansion. The business will be working in conjunction with Von Maur Department Store. The Corners is said to be a $200 million development with plans to house stores, restaurants, various retail businesses as well as 244 apartments on the upper level.
I chose to write about this local news story because it encompasses two newsworthy articles in one. This development will bring in an extensive amount of job opportunities for Wisconsinites as well as provide the conveniences of shopping and dining all in one. Seeing a family owned franchise such as L.L. Bean continue to flourish is always positive and I think positive news stories often get lost in the clutter of negative news stories.

NATIONAL
Donald Trump unofficially clinched the Republican nomination this week by claiming 29 unbound
Republican delegates. In order to win the Republican nomination, a candidate must reach 1,237
delegates; Trump currently has 1,239 delegates, a number expected to increase following the primary
elections on June 7th vote. According to NPR political editor, Domenico Montanaro, "75-80% of
republicans in polling say they are going to get behind Donald Trump... Democratic unity hasn't
quite happened in the way that it has or appears to be happening on the Republican Side." This
'Republican unity' is said to be one contributor to Trump's success.
I chose to write about this national news story because of the controversy and attention this
presidential race has gained. As contributing members of society, I think talking about important
issues such as the presidential race are vital. Though my goal in writing about this news story was
not to stir up political differences, my goal was to get people talking because knowledge is very
powerful.

INTERNATIONAL
President Barack Obama visited Vietnam, Japan this past week to amend ties between the two
nations. In an effort to solidify the new relationship between Japan and the U.S.A, President Obama
lifted the 50-year ban on weapons sales to the communist government. In lifting this ban, Vietnam is
ensured the ability to defend itself as well as removes the lingering vestige of the Cold War.
President Obama is only the third president to visit Vietnam thus far and stated "Other signs of
cooperation between the former combatants include new business sales, more military cooperation,
research programs involving universities in both countries and cultural exchanges that include the
introduction of the U.S Peace Corps to Vietnam"- in a news conference in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital.
I chose to write about this international news story because of the history the U.S.A has with
Vietnam. This event marked an immense turning point between the two nations that will hopefully
lead to more camaraderie.

Personal Bio
Hi everyone!
My name is Taylor Campbell, and I am currently a senior here at UWGB. I am a Communications major, with a triple emphasis in Journalism, Mass Media and Public Relations; as well as a minor in Spanish and Latin American studies. Career wise, my dream job is to be a Sportscaster and if I am able to specify, I would love to specialize in hockey (NHL). In an effort to further this dream, I am currently the sports reporter for the Fourth Estate. I have also done some work with ESPN, and will be interning with Time Warner Cable Sports as their summer reporter. I am from the Milwaukee area, so I love the Brewers, Admirals, Bucks, you name it. I also love spending time at the Public Market in the Third Ward and exercising at the Lakefront. I am very excited for this class because I think it will give me a really well rounded understanding of journalism and how to adapt to different situations professionally.
